Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Language Curriculum Statement, Knowledge and Skills Progression

Subject Vision:

‘A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.’ (National Curriculum 2014 – Appendix A)

Statement of Intent:

The intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages and about other cultures, developing the children’s curiosity and deepening their understanding of the wider world around them.

At Whimple Primary School children participate in weekly French language lessons in KS2 and follow the ‘Twinkl Plan It’ scheme of work.  Although French lessons are not part of the curriculum in the EYFS and KS1, we endeavour to embed an awareness and develop familiarity with the French language across the school through the use of songs, rhymes and as part of class routines, such as taking the register, to build a foundation for their learning in KS2.

It is important to us that alongside the learning of the French language, the children also develop an understanding of French culture, contributing to their overall development as global citizens and in turn helping them to build an alternative perspective on the world. We aim to embed the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing and to build the children’s cultural knowledge so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures, thus building on their ‘cultural capital’. In doing so, we hope to lay the foundations for future language learning.
